Exodus 28:1-43
After Moses received the Ten Commandments from the Lord, he was told to build the tabernacle. This was followed by the establishment of the Levitical priesthood with the divine appointment of Aaron as high priest. The Lord said to Moses, "Now take Aaron your brother, and his sons with him, from among the children is Israel, that he may minister to Me as priest, Aaron and Aaron's sons, Nadab, Abihu, Eleazar, and Ithamar. And you shall make holy garments for Aaron your brother, for glory and for beauty. So you shall speak to all who are gifted artisans, whom I have filled with the spirit of wisdom, that they may make Aaron's garments, to consecrate him, that he may minister to Me as priest. And these are the garments which they shall make: a breastplate, an ephod, a robe, a skillfully woven tunic, a turban, and a sash. So they shall make holy garments for Aaron your brother and his sons, that he may minister to Me as priest." Exodus 28:1-4.
What was the ministry of the priest?
First, he received tithes. In Hebrews 7:5 we read, "And indeed those who are of the sons of Levi, who receive the priesthood, have a commandment to receive tithes from the people according to the law...."
Second, he offered sacrifices to the Lord. "For every high priest is appointed to offer both gifts and sacrifices." Hebrews 8:3. The Levitical priests in the Old Testament offered sacrifices on a daily basis to make atonement for the soul. See Leviticus 17:11.
When the Lord gave the Ten Commandments to Moses, He knew that no one would obey them. The commandments were never given as a means of salvation. "For by the works of the law no flesh shall be justified." Galatians 2:16. The law was given to reveal sin. Romans 3:19, 20. Following the giving of the law, the Lord proceeded to provide a way of forgiveness. Atonement was made, sins were covered, through the shedding of the blood of bulls and goats. "And according to the law almost all things are purified with blood, and without shedding of blood there is no remission." Hebrews 9:22.
Jesus Christ is our High Priest. "And every priest stands ministering daily and offering repeatedly the same sacrifices, which can never take away sins. But this Man, after He had offered one sacrifice for sins forever, sat down at the right hand of God." Hebrews 10:11, 12. This High Priest "is also able to save to the uttermost those who come to God through Him." Hebrews 7:25. Praise the Lord!
Lord, thank You for the blood and Your abounding grace to us. Thank You for a High Priest, who understands our weaknesses and trials. We offer the sacrifice of praise. In Jesus' name. Amen!
